Generation X : born 1965-1980: current age 59 - 44

Generation X came of age during the uncertain times of the oil crisis and the Cold War. They
also experienced major technological advances such as computers. Often both their parents
worked and so they were “latchkey kids” taking care of themselves after school until their
parents got home from their jobs. They are known for their independence, self-reliance, and
adaptability. Generation X as adults have attempted to have a better work life balance than the
                    previous generation.

How Generation X may fit in Toastmasters - While Boomers might join Toastmasters to build
skills to use at work- members of Generation X may be seeking to develop enjoyments outside
their regular nine to five. They might want to balance out their day to day job by building a
sense of community or expressing creativity. Known for their independence, Gen X members
might be the people to turn if there is a project you need someone to do solo.

                    Millennials : born 1981-1996: current age 43 - 28

Also known as Generation Y. Millennials are the largest and most diverse geeration in the
workforce. They grew up during a time of rapid technological change and expanded options
for communication such as social media. Most remember the impact of 9-11-2001 and the 2008
housing bubble burst with the recession that followed. Like Gen X, Millennials value work-life
balance. They seek out work environments that allow the elements of fun and creativity. They
search for ethical employers who offer flexibility and development opportunities. They may
choose experiences over long term job security. They prefer to communicate through digital
channels, including email, text messages, and social media.

How Millennials may fit in Toastmasters - Millennials may seek out Toastmasters as an opportu-
nity for personal growth, be creative and have fun. Millennials also may pick clubs that focus on
causes or politics. Most Millennials will have the skills for the Vice President of PR position and
be adept at running club websites and social media.
