A SEASON OF STORIES

paper and a pen out of her purse and started to Laura ignored the snide comment, “I plan

scribble. Smiling, she said, “I feel just like Miss to visit the police station and ask to look at the
Marple with a case to solve. Question number official report. You can do that, you know. I
one. Why did Rich tell us a guest found the image the report will shed light on things that
body, while you said a housekeeper found it? If the police might have missed.”

the body was found the next morning wouldn’t “Laura, you are a legend in your own mind.
the guests have gone home the night before?” Let’s go. This old house gives me the creeps.”
“I can answer that,” interjected Penny, “I read Penny stood and marched towards the door
it in the paper so it must be right.” while John grabbed the cart and followed. Laura

Laura raised her eyebrows as she continued. flipped off the light switches, plunging the house
“Question number two.” Laura stopped when into darkness.
she heard the front door open. “John, I thought For the second time that night Penny let out
you left.” a blood curdling scream.

“I took Clyde out to the car and came back
to see if you ladies need help with your things. To be continued . . .
Sorry to interrupt, you seem to be deep in
      conversation.”

“That’s kind of you John. We were making a
list of questions that need to be answered about
William’s death. Do you want to help us?”
“I’m not sure I have anything to add. What

      do you have?”
Laura reviewed her first question for John.
“Question number two. “Did anyone hear
Terry’s mother confront William? Is the "W"in

her diary William? Was there someone else at
the party that night with the same initial? If
Terry was William’s child why didn’t her mother
contact the Peabody family so they could help

her and she could get to know her grandparents?
And then there’s the biggest question of all. Was
it an accident or was it murder?’’
“That is quite a list you have Laura. How

do you intend to find the answers to all those
      questions?”
“Yes Laura, how do you plan to figure it all
out?” asked Penny. “You are NO Miss Marple.”
