COVER STORY
The Four A’s of Leadership
Pastor Dorothy Cottingham, DTM, PID
Those who can’t lead – manage.
This was a favorite saying of the late Ed Buzzard
Toastmasters International Director from Region 1, 1984-1986.
Ed thought of himself, not as a great speaker or charismatic
leader, but as a decidedly decent manager. . . he was wrong!
I knew him to be a brilliant leader. . . and a revered mentor
to hundreds of Toastmasters over the years, myself included.
Thinking about Ed got me to thinking about the difference
. between commendable managers and inspiring leaders. You
.
may be wondering about those same differences. Let’s explore
the subject together.
WHAT IS A MANAGER?
A manager is one who makes detailed plans. A good
manager always has an elaborate ‘to-do’ list, maybe even
more than one going. A good manager knows the whole team,
particularly the strengths and interests of each member. This
personal knowledge helps the manager make appropriate
assignments of the tasks that need to be done.
A good manager is organized and creates clear flow-charts
for everyone on the team, those who will be doing the work.
