our goals. Then on another chart, using a green marker, he listed our ideas about what
stops us from reaching our goals.
We rated our self-reliance strengths and weakness to help
us decide how we needed to “do the work” to improve our
personal goal setting skills. This was an internally imposed
goal setting exercise which allowed us to clarify and
complete our own important goals. This was in stark
contrast to externally imposed goal-setting processes used
by most companies and organizations. Tom showed us
how important it is to be surrounded by people, like Toastmasters, who provide
encouragement to help us set and progress through our personal goals.
Combining Tom’s workshop with testimonials from Siuslaw Tale Spinners members
persuaded four guests to join that day. One guest had been visiting the library and not
on the attendee roster. She was invited to attend the workshop, on the spur of the
moment, and ended up joining and enrolling her husband as a member.
One of my big lessons from Tom’s presentation was “It’s your job to ask someone; it’s their
job to say either yes or no.” Tale Spinners is now one member away from achieving charter
-strength membership. With still a few weeks left in this Toastmasters year, we will attain
President’s Distinguished status.
