slaw Tale Spinners Hosts Community Workshops

Ann Machalek, ACG, ALB

Siuslaw Tale Spinners and Area 34 have been hosting District 7 workshops for their communities and fellow
Toastmasters. Both Eric Winger and Tom Cox were featured speakers recently in Florence , Oregon.

Eric Winger presented Public Speaking 101 and Beyond, a free all-
day workshop in Florence, Oregon to Toastmasters and guests
on April 11, 2015. The morning session focused on speaking tips
and techniques. Before noon, we realized that we could no
longer say,“But I have nothing to talk about.”

The afternoon session was focused speech evaluations.
Participants concentrated on one area of a presentation (vocal,
gestures, stage presence, visual aids). Learning how to identify
and hear the point, or the message, of the speaker was a major
part of both the speaking and evaluation workshops.

Eric provided us with some excellent tools—

 how to fit the cornucopia of our life’s experiences, hopes, and dreams into a visual Tic
Tac Toe +1 square (adding a “change factor” ) to create stories with lessons learned
that can be shared with the audience.

 how we can get beyond our “brain freezes” when delivering a speech by visualizing a
baseball diamond, placing our subpoints with supporting details at each base, and
then moving our presentations around the bases for a home run.

 how using a poem format, when writing and rehearsing our speeches, will supply us
with natural pauses and vocal variety making our presentations sound more
conversational.

Finally, he cautioned us to factor in additional time when using props, effective pauses,
body language and movement in contest speeches. Looking back, Eric gave us a nutshell
version of the Competent Communicator manual.

On May 9, the Siuslaw Tale Spinners held an Open House
and another free workshop for Toastmasters and the
Florence community. Tom Cox was the featured speaker, He
gave a memorable 90-minute presentation titled How to Set
Powerful Goals that Motivate You.

Tom asked us to shout out, while he listed in green marker
on a flip chart, what intangibles and tangibles would help us GO towards accomplishing
