Eric takes a strong interest in helping members be more
successful evaluators. He has held workshops throughout the
District to help members improve their evaluation skills. His
method, which includes using the words “effective” and “less
effective” instead of “what you did well” and “opportunities
for improvement” have made a difference in my evaluation
style. Eric is serving as the Speakers Bureau coordinator,
giving talented members another vehicle for practicing their
public speaking skills outside the club. He is also a coach for
the youth communications club, Future Stars. Eric is always welcoming and ready to help when
asked.

Leadership cannot be taught, but the qualities for leadership which are present in a man can be
developed and revealed and made available for use through training in self-expression and self-
control. Leaders can be taught and trained. Thus may be justified the idea of “leadership through
speech,” provided we realize that speechmaking in itself is not an end, but merely one step, and a
very important one, in the direction of preparing for service and leadership. (Dr. Ralph Smedley,
August 1954)
