FIELD NOTES
Let That Brain Blossom
B. Lee Coyne, ATMS
From deep beneath the soil, the signs of Spring are awakening.
Subterranean hibernation has ended. Plant life resumes.
Just as horticulture has its renewal so too does our human mind.
Let’s allow new ideas and practices to also start to sprout. There
shall be no excuse for stagnation, whether young or old.
I pen this column as a retired therapist who has worked in five
states. The result has been diverse people and problems. Covid has
derailed those normal routines and made coping far more difficult.
Hence, we all need greater courage to face our future.
I therefore introduce you to a Positives Plus project I have
created. Some counselors choose to immediately focus on your
devastating problems. I find that counterproductive. It saps
self-confidence!
In our garden of worries, we seek out more fertile ground.
Instead we explore success stories where we met up with major
obstacles.
At the beginning the outlook was dim. We felt ourselves involved
in a losing battle. Yet we refused to surrender and run away.
Gradually a new day dawned. The clouds lifted away. Our new
strategies began to bear fruit. We ultimately came out on top.
Let that pivot point be our lesson in life. Permit that to become
our inspiration when facing a serious challenge of today. We can
grow within once the brain blossoms. Sprinkle in self-love.
