oria Toastmasters Celebrates 65th Anniversary
Robert McClelland
On April 6, 2015 the Astoria Toastmasters
celebrated its 65th anniversary during the club’s
regularly scheduled meeting at the Hotel Elliot
in downtown Astoria. An enthusiastic
contingent from the Ilwaco Toastmasters in
southwest Washington traveled across the
Columbia River to join in the festivities. Several
guests from the general community were also in
attendance to learn the value of being a
Toastmaster.
The schedule of events included two Members of the Astoria Toastmasters at the 65th Anniversary. Left
educational talks by members. Christa to right: Kathy Boyer, Sherry Holdiman, Christa Svensson, Robert
McClelland, Vance Swenson, and Frank Hupp
Svensson, President of the Astoria Toastmasters , spoke about the club’s evolution over the
years and how our current members are putting into practice what they have gleaned from
Toastmasters. Kathy Boyer, the Treasurer, gave an Ice-Breaker speech to model what that
first speech might look like. Her talk focused on the imperative to overcome each obstacle
that individuals encounter.
It was indeed a very festive occasion! Balloons and flowers decorated the head table and a
variety of refreshments were provided for members and guests to enjoy throughout the
gathering. Members and guests lingered after the talks to partake of a special ice-cream
cake and apple cider.
Members take great pride in the club’s longevity. Although the club has a relatively small
membership, its foundation is strong and the members wholeheartedly support one
another in their efforts to achieve personal communication and leadership goals. Christa
Svensson remarked that since joining Toastmasters she had gotten more comfortable with
public speaking, developed better listening skills, gained an understanding on how to give
a helpful evaluation, improved her leadership skills and found an incredible group of
friends. She also acknowledged that while “we may not be the biggest what we provide is
valuable.”
The Astoria Toastmasters meets the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Monday of the month from 6:30 to 7:45
p.m. in the Hotel Elliot, 357 12th Street, Astoria. Robert McClelland joined Astoria
Toastmasters in 2011, and is currently serving as the VP Membership.
