ebrating Success at Babble-On
Toastmasters
David Freedman, CC
Several friends suggested I look into Toastmasters, because as a
performer I was seeking to expand my skills and gain additional
experience as a public speaker. In November 2013, I decided to join Babble-On Toastmasters
in Portland, Oregon, In addition, I could also learn leadership skills that might help me in other
areas.
A year-and-a-half after joining Babble-On, I completed my
Competent Communicator Manual (CC) and received both my
certificate and pin. One of the ways our club celebrates a
person’s completion of any manual is to present a club
certificate recognizing the accomplishment, signed by every
person present at that meeting. Each person writes a short note
of congratulations or encouragement. Our President, Robert
Wilson, instituted this practice—which our members love.
Some of the comments written on my certificate include: “Awesome job, David! You inspire
me!” and “Congratulations for your discipline!” As I read each of these comments, I was
reminded of all the work I put into this educational program as well as the new skills I have
developed. I was also reminded that in Toastmasters I am surrounded by positive and
supportive friends in a nurturing learning environment.
In recognizing competence, our club acknowledges the many lessons learned from the
Competent Communicator Manual. The CC recipient has learned everything from giving an
icebreaker speech to essentials of body language, tone of voice, how to inspire an audience,
and many other factors that go into creating an excellent speech. The personalized club
certificate becomes a tangible reminder that the speaker’s achievement of competence by
allowing fellow Toastmasters to participate in the completion of the process.
As a writer and transcriptionist, I understand the value of language, both written and oral, in
developing the finer points of speaking to an audience and getting a solid message across. As
an actor and singer, I have many years of stage experience that have helped enormously in my
preparation and delivery of speeches with Toastmasters. These personalized certificates are a
great morale booster for the individual recipient as well as for the club itself. You may want to
consider trying this practice out in your own club.
David Freedman joined Babble-On in 2013. He's earned his Competent Communicator award, and
is currently working towards his next level of achievement.
