Once is Never Enough. . .

By Leanna Lindquist, DTM—Program Quality Director

If you are like most Toastmasters, you think Competent Leader (CL) and Competent
Communication (CC) manuals can only be completed once in a lifetime. You may be
surprised to know that these two manuals not only can be, but should be, repeated
over and over.

Recently on Facebook, I asked “how many CC and CL have you earned?” These are the
responses:

Erik Bergman, DTM—6 CC, 6 CL—I keep
learning and practicing
Cleon Cox, DTM—31 CC
Daniel Flood—5 CC, 5 CL
Lee Spargo—5 CC, 1 CL
Donna Stark, DTM—5 CC, 6 CL
John Lawless, DTM—1 CC, 1 CL
Karen O’Keefe, DTM—4 CC, 3 CL
Brent Smith—5 CC, 1 CL
Bob Smith—5 CC, 2 CL
Phyllis Harmon, DTM—9 CC, 5 CL current in
progress
Leanna Lindquist, DTM—4 CC, 4 CL
Gary Schmidt, DTM, PIP—32 CC

Why do people continue completing CC and CL manuals? Personally, I want to craft
and present the speech better than the last time. My manual speeches provide an
opportunity for others to improve their evaluation skills.

When I’m not an assigned speaker, I usually serve in another club role. The CL manual
provides me with direction for fulfilling the role. When I receive credit in my manual it
provides an evaluation opportunity for another member. Earning the CC and CL always
help my clubs become Distinguished.

In other words, I grow, my club members grow, and our club becomes a quality club.
