Meet the Keynotes

Lessons to the Top—
The World Championship Journey

Mary Cheyne, 1st Runner Up, 2009 World Champion Public Speaking,
joined Toastmasters to overcome her self-consciousness as a public
speaker. She needed a place to go to practice where the people were
supportive and non-judgmental. What she found was much more. Mary
says that one of the best things about Toastmasters are the many friends she's made both
in the US and world-wide.

When asked about how long she had practiced her award-winning speech, Mary shared
"After the 2009 world championship, it was very rewarding to hear from people who told
me they were impacted by the message of how I handle my “inner critic” in my last
speech. But most people are also surprised to hear that I had tested and tweaked the
speech for 42 test audience groups. It is a time-consuming and tedious process, but it is
necessary if you really care about the value of your message for the audience."

During Mary's keynote, she will share lessons she's learned during her World Champion-
ship journey and beyond that can be applied to your life, break your personal barriers and
reach the top of your own game.

Also, I immediately see the big action scenes. I draw each page as a fast
sketch in about five minutes before I hand the page to one of my illustrators
to refine. For Jack AngelSword, I provided two pages a day to my illustrators.
Soon, we had pages in rough form for three graphic novels. It’s about
starting with the first graphic novel (100 pages) and then we did the third
graphic novel (the ending of this trilogy). When I know the ending, I can go
back to the second graphic novel and plant seeds that blossom in the third
graphic novel. My real process is doing something daily and NOT hesitating. We know that
we’ll refine the work in that next phase of the process.

Tom shared that before he goes on stage, his favorite way to prepare to meet the audience, "I
have a prayer focused on “How may I serve?” and “They’re going to have a good time.” I also
rehearse. I tell my clients to imagine a kind, supportive grandmother saying, “Feeling fear?
Rehearse my dear.” Finally, I use deep breathing, Tai Chi moves, and a Qigong breath-method.
I rehearse often. My focus is: Courage is easier when you’re prepared. I log my rehearsal times.
My other focus point is: Keep score and achieve more.

In his keynote, Tom will share the 3 C's of Success (Charisma, Confidence, and Control of
Time) which has led to his personal success both on and off the stage.
