ly Words Celebrates 45th Anniversary
Louis Locke, DTM
Early Words Toastmasters #3657 celebrated their 45th anniversary on March 17th at
Terri’s Restaurant in Longview, Washington. Phyllis Harmon, District Governor, was the
keynote speaker. Her trek to Longview was very much appreciated.
There were about 25 people present for
the awards ceremony, top Toastmaster
of the year, Best Evaluator, Best Table
Topics and Best Speaker. A founder’s
award, i.e. The Earl Mershon Award, was
awarded to Mathew Bone for his
dedication and readiness to help the
club and new members. Patrick Palmer receiving Best Evaluator Award from Phyllis Harmon,
We were also honored to have George while Patrick Locke observes the presentation.
Raiter as a guest. He was a member from 1973 to 1982. He served as club president
and most of the other offices. He has served Longview and
Cowlitz County in various positions including City
Councilman, Mayor, State Representative and most recently
County Commissioner. He credits Toastmasters for
launching his career in public service.
Marion Metke receiving Award for Everyone had a good time. Marion Metke and her daughter
deceased husband, Bob Metke Martha were present as we honored her late husband, Bob
Metke, for serving as club president and all of his
contributions to Early Words. (He had been in various clubs
around the country being involved in Toastmasters for over
60 years.)
Our charter is dated 4/1/70; however St. Patrick’s Day has always been the day of choice
to celebrate. Considering the two dates, it is easy to see why March 17th, St. Patrick's Day
was chosen. The Founder, Earl Mershon, was of Scottish decent. Earl and the other
cofounder were both engineering managers, and they were concerned about the
engineers working for them and their communications skills. In 1970, almost 75% of
the members were engineers from Weyerhaeuser or Reynolds. The original meeting
place was the grand old Monticello Hotel. When it closed, Early Words spent a few years
moving from location to location. We have been at our present location at Canterbury
Park since June of 2010. Louis Locke, DTM joined Toastmasters in 1972. He is a member of Early
Words Toastmasters where he servies aas club treasurer.
