FIELD NOTES
THE GIFT OF THE LIFT
Lee Coyne, ATMS
Christmas time is ringing in.
Melodies proclaim that it's the
"most wonderful time of the year" but that isn't true for all.
We are a nation divided by Covid and high prices and often by
low outcomes. Racism and sexism are running rampant. We are all
craving for relief.
Now in retirement, i have had ample time to give
thoughts to better coping.
This requires creating an empathy for others starting with
asserting Toastmasters skills of attentive listening.
That in itself validates
our counterpart that they are adequately valued.
We must bear in mind that life experiences vary from person to
person. Paths shape attitudes.
Hence we carry along carry-over effects from our past. When we
meet a new person quite often something from olden days lurks in
out mind. We freely associate.
Our reaction is steeped in ancient flashbacks tethered to our
many yesterdays. Novelty is rare.
Be generous in love and caring for others. You have not lived
their lives. You have not confronted their triumphs nor their
setbacks. You might well falter if you did.
We each owe our brothers and sisters the benefit of that doubt
along that mystical winding trail.
Supply that welcome gift of a lift. Begin in Christmas.
And keep it going all year long!
