Aiming for Distinguished
Leanna Lindquist, DTM—Program Quality Director Elect
We are not the first District to refer to June as the Month of Miracles. All
over the world clubs are holding last minute open houses, they are
inviting past members to return and continue their Toastmasters
journey. Individual members are pushing themselves further out of their comfort zone as
they squeeze in one more speech or project. It is heart warming to see everyone pull
together and aim for the coveted status of Distinguished. With
everyone working towards the same goals miracles do
happen.
Why a Distinguished Club? Merriam Webster says
distinguished is marked by “distinction or excellence”.
In “The Excellence Book, 104 Principles for Living and Working”,
1992 World Champion of Public Speaking Dana LaMon, DTM says
“it’s through excellence that you reach the peak of your
performance.” Being a member of a Distinguished Club provides
you an environment that helps you excel and reach your full
potential. Members of Distinguished, Select Distinguished and Presidents Distinguished
Clubs like and appreciate the club culture that promotes excellence.
When July 1st rolls around and the tally for the accomplishments of 2014-2015 are
known, will District 7 be Distinguished? Will we stand on the big stage at the
International Convention in Las Vegas to be applauded by the 14,649 clubs being
represented? We will know soon. Most clubs will meet one more time before July 1st. I
urge each and everyone of you to give it your best shot. After all, June is the Month of
Miracles.
Special Incentives If you are the member who earns the needed award or the member
who joins a club that makes it Distinguished you may choose from: Public Speaking 101:
Messages That Matter by Randy J. Harvey or The Unbreakable Rules of Marketing by
Cathey Armillas.
If your club brings in three new, dual or reinstated members in June earn a banner,
banner stand, lectern or $100 gift card to Toastmasters International.
When all 7 of your officers attend TLI they will be invited to attend the special June 27th
evening event featuring Past International Presidents Jana and Bob Barnhill and Gary
Schmidt. The event involves food, fun and friends in Portland from 6:00 - 8:30 pm.
