Is a Speaker Heard if No One is Listening?
Phyllis Harmon, DTM
Here is a conundrum: If a speaker speaks and no one listens, have they been heard?
Think about it. Communication is an interactive sport. How often do you find yourself
tuning out in a Toastmasters meeting during a speech? A couple weeks ago, I was
Grammarian. I was listening intently, picking up words and phrases to share during
my report. It surprised me that one of the evaluators hadn't
heard what I heard. The speaker shared crucial information
about themselves in their introduction. However, the evaluator
said the speech lacked clarity. They had not heard or
remembered the speaker's introduction. If they had, they would
have discovered that the speech contained a call to action
based on the introduction. Listening is hard work, and the
Grammarian role is one of the most challenging. When
you listen, do it with your entire self. Be present.
